Cash prizes

The audience hook, cash!

Cash prizes are the principal audience hook.

Cash is what drives gameplay, it is one of the many motivating factors that drive people to the show. However, once in the game, cash can sometimes matter less than the competitiveness of playing against others in real-time.

How it works

Each show rewards a cash prize which is divided among winners. Winners are the people remaining at the end of the game, those that have not been eliminated.

Example: For a $1000 prize, if there are 200 winners, each user who won will receive $5.

Once users reach a configurable winnings threshold they can cash out via Paypal from their account page.

The list of daily payouts to players is then retrievable in Studio, in a CSV file compatible directly with Paypal Payouts or other mass payment systems.

Cash out threshold

A cash-out threshold is used for several reasons:

  • Users generally have to win several times before being able to get their winnings, driving repeat play

  • The number of transactions is reduced, leading to lower transaction fees

  • Some players may not reach the threshold, making rewards exclusive for those more dedicated players.

...although it is also important to consider that these benefits may come at the cost of user frustration if the threshold seems impossible to reach.

A standard strategy is to allow for easy win during the game, it will divide the prize pot into small gains for each winner. That way winning again seems feasible and generate user retention for all winners.

And once in a while doing a really hard quiz to have only a handful winners to show that winning big is possible on the leaderboards.

It is also possible to run games until there is a "Last man standing" - one player or a small number who split the prize between them.
